Hearing Protection
Noise pollution at workplaces are primarily of two kinds. Loud noises that extend over varying periods of time and short impact or impulse noises (a loud short-lived explosion of sound).
A combination of various factors come together to cause various hearing conditions. Factors such as the duration of exposure to the noise, number of sources where the noise(s) originate from and the amount of movement between the varying noise levels are some of the major contributors to hearing impairments. The effects of noise pollution include reduced hearing, hypertension, lack of sleep, irritability and even heart disease.
Impact/impulse noises in particular can be quite damaging. Sources include nail guns, punch press or drop hammers to name a few.
Below is a table outlining the acceptable noise exposure levels.

In the United States alone, in the year 2012, it was recorded that 20,300 workers were treated for eye injuries caused at their workplace, with 1 in every 20 requiring time off work. For the same time period an estimated USD $300 million was spent in medical treatments and worker’s compensation in the United States. It was also deduced that by taking in to account the nature of the injuries, 90% could have been avoided through the use of proper eye protection.
